How To Master the Muscle-Up

Muscle-ups are a full-body workout that comprises doing a pull-up on rings or a pull-up bar following a dip. There are many benefits of doing muscle-ups in contrast to just pull-ups or dip.  Muscle-ups improve upper body power and strength.  It is the best upper body workout especially for CrossFitters.

Keep in mind that a bar muscle-up is a lot harder to do than a ring muscle-up because it is a non-moving object that can make it difficult to get into the position to press out.

Before you try to attempt a muscle-up, you should be proficient with:

  • kipping pull-ups

  • kipping chest-to-bar pull-ups and dips

  • strict pull-ups

If you don’t have the strict pull-up mastered yet, then a bar muscle-up will be very difficult to accomplish. Development of the latissimus dorsi, trapezius (upper and lower), supraspinatus, infraspinatus, teres minor, and subscapularis are important, not just for strength, but to protect the rotator cuff muscles and back. Working on the above exercises will help to strength these muscles.

The momentum you generate from your hips can make or break your muscle-up. Maintaining a strong core throughout is key, because if you lose your mid-line, you’ll lose your momentum. So, make sure to practice your kipping and watch the video below for tips on how to properly execute a muscle-up:

Pullups: The Ultimate Test of Relative Body Strength

As you may or may not know, pullups are one of the best workouts that is not only convenient but yields amazing benefits.

Below are a list of the many benefits of doing pullups:

Benefit #1: Convenience

Pullups are one of the most convenient exercises around and can be done almost anywhere.  All you really need is a bar and your body.

Benefit #2: Compound Upper-body Exercise

Compound exercises target multiple muscle groups.  There is no other excise that will make your upper body grow quite like pullups. Specifically, pullups do a great job of targeting the back and biceps. If you want a V-taper physique, pullups are a must!

Benefit #3: Easily Increase Intensity

Regularly increasing the intensity of your workouts is one of the secrets to building muscle. You can boost the intensity of your back workout simply by strapping a weight plate to your waist or hanging a kettle bell or dumbbell from your feet.

Benefit #4: Many Variations

There are so many variations to pull ups.  The great thing is that one variation doesn’t require any additional equipment than another variation. All you’ve got to do is change up your grip.  The overhand pullup is the best variation for getting your lats to grow nice and wide.  Other variations are grip pullups and reverse grip pullups or chinups place more emphasis on the biceps.

Benefit #5: Grip Strength

Pullups are the perfect exercise for strengthening your grip.

Benefit #6: Fat Loss

Pullups will get your heart rate up and really kick your butt. If you want to boost the fat loss effects of pullups, decrease the time in-between sets or super-set your pullups with another exercise.

CrossFit: Why It’s Worth Trying

Image result for motivation crossfit

Below are 5 reasons why CrossFit is worth a try if you’re looking for a fitness journey that can make positive changes in your life.

  1. It’s a challenge: CrossFit can provide a challenge both mentally and physically.  Some say that if you are not progressing then you’re regressing and embracing a challenge leads to progress.

  2. You will definitely see results: if you commit to CrossFit, you will see results in your agility, strength, endurance and overall health.  It will also encourage you to eat nutritious food to fuel your body so you can improve your performance and generate better results.

  3. It creates empowerment: CrossFit makes you feel empowered when you complete workouts you never thought would be possible.  It gives you a sense of ownership, control and contributes to the mindset that you are a total boss.

  4. It’s a culture and a community: CrossFit individuals experiencing real challenges and providing endless support for one another quickly become a family, NOT just a class. Most gyms participate in group activities like The Open or local competitions, and many encourage members to give back to the local community outside their own walls.

  5. It’s workout with a purpose: CrossFit doesn’t only specialize in one area of your body.  It is an overall fitness experience that is fun and aims to improve quality of living by making everyday movements part of programming.
